Teaching Kids to Pray: The ACTS Prayer Model

Prayer is a powerful way for kids to build a relationship with God, but sometimes they don’t know where to start. The ACTS prayer model is a simple and effective way to teach children how to pray with structure and meaning. It breaks prayer into four easy-to-follow parts:

  1. A – Adoration (Praise)

  2. C – Confession (Saying Sorry)

  3. T – Thanksgiving (Gratitude)

  4. S – Supplication (Asking for Help)

Let’s explore each step in a way kids can understand!

  1. Adoration – Praising God

Adoration means telling God how great He is! Kids can say things like:

  • "God, You are amazing!"

  • "I love You because You are always with me."

  • "You created the whole world, and that is awesome!"

Encourage children to start their prayers by focusing on who God is rather than jumping straight to requests.

2. Confession – Saying Sorry

This is when we tell God about our mistakes and ask for forgiveness. Kids can pray:

  • "I’m sorry for being mean to my friend today."

  • "Please forgive me for not listening to my parents."

  • "Help me to do better tomorrow."

Teaching kids to confess helps them understand that God forgives and loves them no matter what.

3. Thanksgiving – Saying Thank You

This part helps kids develop gratitude. They can say:

  • "Thank You for my family and friends."

  • "Thank You for food, my home, and all the blessings in my life."

  • "I’m grateful for the sunshine and a fun day at school!"

Focusing on thankfulness reminds kids of God’s goodness.

4. Supplication – Asking for Help

Now, they can ask God for help for themselves and others:

  • "Please help my friend who is sick."

  • "Help me be kind and patient."

  • "Bless my parents and teachers."

This teaches kids to bring their needs to God while also praying for others.

Making It Fun!

  • Use a prayer journal for kids to write or draw their ACTS prayers.

  • Turn it into a family prayer time, with each person taking a turn.

  • Use hand motions to help younger kids remember the four parts.

By using the ACTS model, kids can develop a strong and balanced prayer life that helps them grow in faith.
